Winter falls hurt the most I think. I'm really glad that you are ok. The studs have been helpful so far.
It's hard to explain to a rider that isn't used to carrying kids that sickening feeling when you have any kind of slide or skid with your kids on the bike even if you just recover and ride away.
I felt a little silly with the winter tires this year but as soon as it got cold again I was relieved to have them again. I'd check out Peter White to read their primer as it's really detailed and...opinionated as always. I think it's about right what D. says in the post. They don't solve everything but I find that I am more confident with them and can just turn my attention a bit more to the other things we need to pay attention to on our wacky city streets.
We ordered ours from the bike shop up the street and had them put mine on this year too.
Sara I'm just really glad you are ok and hope that scary feeling goes away soon.
p.s. we haven't come east yet!Chicargohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03166650767505966551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7682899986857040901.post-43878157268705761252012-02-15T17:50:55.965-06:002012-02-15T17:50:55.965-06:00Took a major digger on black ice three weeks ago, ...Took a major digger on black ice three weeks ago, the Xtra went right out from under me, and I gotta say that I am now more interested in studded tires than ever before. Thankfully, my youngest was not on the back of my bike like he normally is on our commute to school, but on the heavier longtail (Yuba) with my husband. I banged up my ankle and wrist which were puffy and sore for some time but not broken. Mostly, I have to admit that it shook me up in a way I haven't been during these three years of family bike commuting....sarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02800138092758321499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7682899986857040901.post-76847049732009941252012-02-12T11:42:15.441-06:002012-02-12T11:42:15.441-06:00Hi Steven-

Bean which was a funny midwestern mirage for a transplanted New Englander.
We hope that you have a great turn out today at West Town BIkes (today) for the West SIde streets for Cycling CAG Meeting this very afternoon.
